Secure TV Wall Mounting Without the Guesswork

Mounting a TV securely involves more than drilling four holes and putting it on the wall. The viewing height and position, wall construction, bracket suitability and any concealed cables or pipework all need to be considered before drilling begins.

My TV wall mounting service includes:

• Agreeing on a suitable height and position for your TV

• Selecting suitable fixings for the wall construction
• Dust-controlled drilling using a vacuum attachment at the drill point
• Fitting your TV wall bracket securely and making sure it’s level
• Mounting and securing the television

• A basic power-on check once the TV is in position

Most customers supply their own TV bracket, but I’m happy to help you choose or source a suitable one if you’re unsure what you need.

Choosing the Right TV Wall Bracket

Not every TV bracket will fit every television, so it’s worth checking compatibility before buying one. One of the most important things to check is the VESA size. This is the standard distance between the four mounting holes on the back of your TV, measured in millimetres. The bracket must support both the VESA pattern and the weight of your television.

You’ll also need to decide what type of movement you want from the TV.

A fixed bracket keeps the television close to the wall and is a good choice when you’re always watching from roughly the same position.

A tilting bracket allows the screen to angle slightly downwards, which can be useful if the TV needs to sit higher on the wall.

A full-motion or swing-arm bracket lets the television move away from the wall and turn towards different viewing positions. These brackets put different forces through the wall when extended, so the wall construction, bracket and fixings all need to be suitable.

It’s also important to think about your cables. With a full-motion bracket, HDMI and power cables need enough slack to move freely as the television is pulled away from the wall.

Can My TV Be Mounted on This Wall?

The fixing method depends on what the wall is made from. Solid brick, block and concrete walls provide a strong mounting surface when the correct masonry fixings are used. Plasterboard, stud and dot-and-dab walls can also be suitable, but they need to be approached differently.

For hollow or plasterboard walls in particular, the weight of the television, type of bracket and construction behind the plasterboard all matter. A small television on a fixed bracket places very different demands on a wall compared with a much larger TV mounted on a full-motion arm.

How I Approach a TV Wall Mounting Job

Here’s how I approach each stage of the installation:

1. Deciding Where to Mount Your TV

Before drilling begins, I’ll work with you to establish a suitable height and position for your television. I’ll measure the available space and talk through the options with you. There isn’t one perfect mounting height for every room. The size of your TV, your seating position, viewing distance and room layout all need to be considered.

2. Checking Before I Drill

Once the position has been agreed, I scan the planned fixing points with a professional digital wall scanner and carry out physical checks of nearby sockets, switches, radiators and other visible services. This helps reduce the risk of drilling into concealed pipes or electrical cables.

3. Using the Right Fixings

The strength of an installation depends on what’s happening behind the bracket. I carry a range of high-quality fixings designed for different wall constructions, so the fixing method can be matched to the wall rather than relying on whatever plugs happen to come in the bracket box.

4. Keeping Dust Under Control

Drilling into brick, block or plaster can create a surprising amount of dust. I use a vacuum dust-extraction attachment directly at the drill point wherever practical, catching the dust as the holes are made and helping to keep mess to a minimum.

5. Mounting the TV and Final Checks

Once the bracket is securely fixed, the television is carefully mounted and its final position checked. I’ll make sure everything is level and secure before putting the batteries in the remote, switching the TV on and confirming that the installation is complete.

Cable Management for Wall-Mounted TVs

A wall-mounted television can look much better without loose cables hanging underneath it. If you’d like the cables tidied, I can route them through neat white plastic trunking fixed to the surface of the wall. This is optional, so if you’re happy to leave the cables visible or already have your own cable-management arrangement, that’s absolutely fine.

Please note that I only offer surface cable management. I do not chase cables into walls or carry out electrical work. If you’d like a new socket installed behind the television or cables concealed within the wall, this would need to be arranged separately with a suitably qualified tradesperson.

What About Larger TVs?

Because I work independently, whether I can safely install a television depends on its size and weight. Modern TVs can vary enormously in weight even when their screen sizes are similar, and a large television can be difficult for one person to lift and position safely. For that reason, I don’t advertise a blanket “any size TV” service.
